I can’t begin to imagine how Mum must have felt when, as a 5 year old girl just starting school, she’s told that she is about to live through World War 2. But if she could go back to that same classroom today, and slip into the chair behind, she would place a reassuring hand on her young shoulder and say it will be alright. And it has been; she’s had a good life.

Cherished memories of Mrs. Wood, my very first teacher at Palterton Primary School 56 years ago through to my last visit to her in 2023 and almost a lifetime of letters. Mrs. Wood ignited a lifelong passion for learning and reading in me from the very start, a gift that has stayed with me throughout my life. It was an honour to have been one of her pupils, she was truly inspirational.
